Festa dei Ceri

The Festa dei Ceri is an ancient and spectacular tradition held annually in Gubbio, Umbria, on May 15th. Recognized by UNESCO, this festival draws visitors from across Italy and the world to witness a unique blend of spirituality, history, and physical endurance. The event centers on three massive wooden structures, or "ceri," each an octagonal prism approximately 5 meters tall and weighing around 280 to 400 kilograms. Each cerio is topped with a statue of a saint: Sant’Ubaldo (the patron saint, led by masons), San Giorgio (led by merchants), and Sant’Antonio (led by farmers).

The highlight of the festival is a frenzied race where teams of 20 or more men carry these heavy structures at full speed through Gubbio’s steep, narrow, and cobblestoned streets. The race begins in the Piazza Grande and ends at the Basilica di Sant’Ubaldo on Monte Ingino. This intense physical challenge serves as a hymn to the local culture, spirituality, and history of Gubbio.

As a public street festival, there are no opening hours or admission fees. However, the event attracts thousands of tourists, so securing a good viewing position in advance is advisable.
