From Perugia Airport, you can take a shuttle bus or taxi to Perugia’s central train station, then board a regional train to Assisi. Alternatively, high-speed trains connect Rome, Florence, and Bologna to Perugia, followed by the same regional transfer. Once in Assisi, the historic center is compact and best explored on foot. The town is divided into two main levels: the lower town (Bassa) and the upper town (Alta). Most major attractions, including the Basilica of San Francesco, are in the upper section. While taxis and local buses operate within the town, walking is the primary mode of transport due to the narrow, pedestrian-only zones. For accommodation, staying in the upper town provides immediate access to the basilicas and panoramic views but involves navigating steep stairs and limited luggage accessibility. The lower town offers easier access for those with mobility concerns and more modern hotel amenities. Budget travelers can find affordable B&Bs and agriturismos in the surrounding Umbrian countryside, which also provide a peaceful retreat.
