Piazza Sordello

Piazza Sordello is Mantua’s most ancient district, corresponding to the city's boundaries from the Roman era through the late Middle Ages. Historically situated in a strategic, flood-safe location, the square’s layout likely preserves the original Roman decumanus and cardus. During the 15th and 16th centuries, the Gonzaga family transformed the area into a grand display of power. Today, it serves as a central tourist attraction featuring significant landmarks such as the Ducal Palace, the Cathedral, Casa del Rigoletto, Palazzo Castiglioni, and the Bishop's Palace.

The western side of the square features notable architecture, including Palazzo Castiglioni (formerly Palazzo Bonacolsi), built in 1281. Adjacent to it are Palazzo Acerbi, the Torre della Gabbia (Tower of the Cage), and the Bonacolsi Chapel. The Torre della Gabbia is a 50-meter tower named for an iron cage used by the Gonzaga family as an "open-air prison." The Bonacolsi Chapel features 14th-century Giotto-style paintings. However, these buildings on the western side are not open to the general public.

As an open public square, Piazza Sordello has no opening hours or admission fees. It is best explored on foot to appreciate the historic cobblestones and facades reflecting Mantua's noble past.
