The Grotticelli Necropolis is a large Greek and Roman burial ground located within the Archeological Park of Neapolis in Syracuse, Italy. Situated at the bottom of Latomia St. Venera, it is accessible via a scenic stairway. The site features walls adorned with small square niches containing votive pictures of the deceased, offering a poignant glimpse into ancient funerary practices. Entirely excavated in the rock of the Santa Venera quarry, the necropolis serves as a true "city of the dead" and an important testimony to the ancient history of Syracuse.
The site is located at Viale Teracati, 96100 Siracusa. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 9:00 AM until one hour before sunset, and Sundays and holidays from 9:00 AM to 1:45 PM. Note that the site closes at 4:30 PM during the Classical Plays. Admission fees are €10.00 for standard entry and €5.00 for reduced rates (ages 18–25). Entry is free on the first Sunday of the month and for EU citizens under 18. Combined tickets are available for access to other sites, such as the Museum “Paolo Orsi,” Villa Tellaro, and Galleria Bellomo, ranging from €6.00 to €24.00 depending on the combination.
