Arena di Verona

The Arena di Verona is a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre located in Piazza Bra, Verona, Italy. Built around 30 AD using distinctive pink-and-white limestone from the Valpolicella hills, it originally held approximately 30,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles. It is the third-largest surviving Roman amphitheatre, after the Colosseum and Capua. Most of the outer ring was destroyed by an earthquake in 1117; only the four-arch Ala remains from that era. It was originally outside the city walls but became enclosed when Emperor Gallienus extended the walls in 265 AD.

Managed by Musei Civici di Verona, the site is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and Monday from 1:30 PM to 7:30 PM, though hours vary during the summer opera festival and winter months. A self-guided tour typically takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. The famous Arena Opera Festival, a separate summer evening event running since 1913, requires separate ticketing. Verona was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2000.
