Piazza IX Aprile

Piazza IX Aprile is the main and most beautiful square in Taormina, Sicily, located on the pedestrian Corso Umberto between Porta Messina and Porta Catania. It serves as a central hub featuring outdoor cafés, caricature artists, and significant monuments, offering panoramic views of Mount Etna, the Bay of Naxos, and the Teatro Greco. The square is accessible only on foot, situated approximately 450 meters from Porta Messina.

The square was renamed from Piazza Sant’Agostino to Piazza IX Aprile to commemorate April 9, 1860, when rumors spread that Giuseppe Garibaldi had arrived in Marsala to liberate Sicily from Bourbon rule. Notable structures include the 17th-century Church of San Giuseppe, a prime example of Sicilian Baroque with a distinctive double staircase, the deconsecrated Church of Sant’Agostino (now a public library), and the Torre dell’Orologio (Clock Tower), originally built in the 12th century.

Visitors often gather here to enjoy the views, which on a good day extend as far south as Catania, approximately 25 kilometers away.
