Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo in Todi is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, situated at the highest point of the city on Nidoli hill, 398 meters above sea level. Historically significant as the site of the ancient Roman Forum of Tuder, the square is surrounded by key medieval and modern structures, including the Palazzo del Popolo, Palazzo del Capitano, and the Palazzo dei Priori, which was built between the 13th and 14th centuries. The Cathedral of Maria Santissima Annunziata, documented from the 12th century, also overlooks the square.

The square’s flat pavement rests on a monumental system of Roman cisterns, part of an impressive hydraulic engineering network designed to supply water to the hill. These cisterns are accessible via an underground tour that explores wells, tunnels, and cisterns from various eras. The square is open 24 hours a day with free admission and no gates.
