Parco della Murgia Materana

Parco della Murgia Materana is a regional archaeological-natural park established in 1990, located on the limestone plateau directly opposite Matera’s UNESCO-listed Sassi districts. Managed by the Ente Parco Archeologico Storico Naturale delle Chiese Rupestri del Materano, the park protects approximately 150 rupestrian (cave) churches, prehistoric settlements, and a deep river gorge carved by the Gravina torrent. It is renowned for offering the most iconic panoramic views of Matera’s cave city, providing a spectacular landscape that testifies to the ancient relationship between man and nature in southern Italy.

Visitors can explore the park’s diverse terrain, which includes hiking trails leading to historic rock-cut churches and ancient dwellings. The park offers a unique perspective on Matera’s history, allowing guests to see the Sassi from the opposite bank of the ravine. Entry to most points in the park is free, though a €4.50 ticket is required for the Murgia Timone and Belvedere viewpoint areas.
