The Museo Archeologico Nazionale "Giovanni Antonio Sanna" in Sassari is a key cultural institution for northern Sardinia, housed in a neoclassical building designed by architect Michele Busiri Vici. The museum was established following the donation of collections by entrepreneur Giovanni Antonio Sanna. It evolved from the Regio Museo Antiquario (1878) to its current location on Via Roma in 1931, with expansions in 1973 and the addition of a medieval section in 2000.

The exhibits span from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages and Modern Age. A significant ethnographic section features textiles, ceramics, and traditional clothing donated by private individuals like Gavino Clemente and Zely Bertolio. Entering the museum offers a deep dive into Sardinian history, from prehistoric times to the present day.

The museum is closed on Mondays. Opening hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:45 PM, and Wednesday and Friday from 2:00 PM to 7:30 PM. On the first Sunday of the month, it is open from 9:00 AM to 1:45 PM. Admission costs €6.00 for full price and €2.00 for reduced tickets. Notably, on April 25, 2026, entry will be free for all visitors from 9:00 AM to 1:45 PM, with last entry at 1:15 PM.

Exploring the Museo Sanna provides a profound insight into the archaeological and ethnographic heritage of Sardinia. For travelers, it serves as an essential stop to understand the island’s complex history. The combination of ancient artifacts and traditional culture makes it a meaningful destination. It complements visits to other landmarks in Sassari, such as the Cathedral and the Loggia del Colletto, providing a comprehensive view of the region’s identity.
