Bridge of Tiberius

The Bridge of Tiberius (Ponte di Tiberio) is a Roman arch bridge located in Rimini, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Also known historically as the Bridge of Augustus or Bridge of Saint Julian, it crosses the Marecchia port canal. Construction began in 14 AD and ended in 21 AD under Emperors Augustus and Tiberius. It was built to showcase Roman monumental infrastructure and is the oldest surviving Roman bridge decorated with Greek orders.

The bridge is made of Istrian stone, spanning 62.6 meters in total length with a width of 8.6 meters. It features five arches, with the longest span being 10.6 meters. The structure has endured significant damage over the centuries, including intentional destruction by Gothic forces in 552 AD, during a retreat in 1528, and by Spanish troops in 1743. In 1944, retreating German forces attempted to destroy it unsuccessfully during the Battle of Rimini.

Today, the bridge is open 24 hours a day to pedestrian and vehicular traffic, except for heavy goods vehicles. It connects Rimini's centro storico with the borgo San Giuliano. During the summer months, concerts and events are often staged in the canal with the bridge as an impressive backdrop. As an open public space, the bridge has no opening hours or admission fees.
