8.1/10
#1 of 5 in Gallipoli

Porto di Gallipoli is a significant maritime hub in the Ionian Sea, characterized by two main sections: the Ancient Fishing Port (Porto Peschereccio) and the Commercial Port (Porto Mercantile). The Ancient Fishing Port is located near the Fontana Greca and Rivellino, while the Commercial Port runs along the old city walls. A tourist port area is also situated along the waterfront near the train station.

Historically, the port was completely renovated by the Venetians in 1480 and later by the Aragonese, becoming a key hub for the trade of olive oil and wine. By 1850, it had become the most important port in the Ionian area of Salento. Today, it remains a major commercial center and a popular summer tourist destination.

The Ancient Fishing Port is particularly noted for its picturesque sunset views as fishing boats, known as Paranze, return from year-round fishing activities. Protected by the Molo Foraneo and Molo Tramontana breakwaters, the port offers a vibrant atmosphere where visitors can observe local maritime life.

While specific opening hours and admission fees do not apply to the public port areas, access to the waterfront and surrounding historic sites is free. It is advisable to visit during the evening to witness the return of the fishing boats. Exploring Porto di Gallipoli offers a profound insight into the maritime heritage of Salento. For travelers, it serves as an essential stop to appreciate the region’s coastal culture. The combination of historical depth and scenic beauty makes it a memorable destination. It complements visits to the historic island center and the nearby beaches, providing a comprehensive view of Gallipoli’s identity.
