Piazza del Campo

Piazza del Campo is the main public space in the historic center of Siena, Tuscany, and is widely regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares due to its architectural integrity and beauty. Completed in the 12th century, this scallop shell-shaped pedestrian square is surrounded by significant structures including the Palazzo Pubblico, the Torre del Mangia, various palazzi signorili, and the Fonte Gaia. The site was established before the 13th century near the meeting point of three hillside communities (Castellare, San Martino, and Camollia) and served as a marketplace and venue for games and races. It is not located on a former Roman forum.

The name derives from the Italian words campanilismo (local pride) and campanile (bell tower). The piazza is the venue for the twice-a-year Palio di Siena horse race and serves as the finish line for the annual Strade Bianche cycling race. The piazza is part of the Historic Centre of Siena, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 for its exceptional preservation of medieval city planning.

As an open public square, Piazza del Campo has no opening hours or admission fees.
