Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso

The Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso is a small, chapel-like church located within the archaeological site of Villa Jovis on the island of Capri. Situated on the summit of the Lo Capo hill at the eastern extremity of the island, it was constructed around 1610. The church features simple, intimate architecture typical of Capri’s rural buildings, including a traditional vaulted roof.

The site is historically significant as part of the imperial residence of Emperor Tiberius. In the square, which was formerly a panoramic terrace of the Roman villa, stands a bronze stele with a statue of the Madonna. This statue, approximately 5 meters high and weighing 11 quintals, was installed in 1979 using a U.S. Navy helicopter (Sikorsky RH-53-D) after the previous statue was destroyed by lightning and subsequently disappeared. The interior houses a precious painting depicting the Virgin Mary.

Visiting the church offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Sorrento Peninsula and the Gulf of Naples. However, the church opens its doors specifically during the feast of Santa Maria del Soccorso, celebrated on September 7 and 8, when Holy Mass is held.
