Villa Manzoni

Villa Manzoni in Lecco is a historic site and museum that served as the primary residence of the Manzoni family for nearly two centuries. It was the childhood home and source of inspiration for the renowned Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni. The villa’s history dates back to 1621, when Giacomo Maria Manzoni moved from Valsassina to Lecco. It remained the family home until 1818, when it was sold to Giuseppe Scola, an industrialist who preserved its original character and literary identity.

The view from the villa’s upper floors, featuring Lake Como and the Resegone mountain range, is widely believed to have inspired the famous opening lines of Manzoni’s novel, I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed). Today, the villa functions as the Museo Manzoniano, a house-museum and cultural hub. It houses the Galleria Comunale d'Arte, a specialized archive, library, and photo archive. The building features an ashlared facade and is divided into rustic and noble sections.

For 2026, the museum is closed on Mondays. On Tuesdays, it is open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Villa Manzoni belongs to Si.M.U.L., the museum system of Lecco. Thanks to a cumulative ticket, visitors can also access Palazzo delle Paure, the Osservatorio Alpinistico Lecchese, and the three museums hosted at Palazzo Belgiojoso.
