Torre Civica (Campanone)

The Torre Civica, also known as the Campanone, is a prominent landmark located in Piazza Vecchia, Bergamo. Rising to a height of 52.76 meters, it offers panoramic views of the old city and houses Lombardy's largest bell. Construction began in the mid-12th century by the Suardi-Colleoni family as a defensive structure and symbol of political prestige. It became public property when Bergamo was an independent township. Between the late 1200s and early 1300s, a mechanical clock and an imposing bell were added.

Structural modifications include the addition of prison cells in the base during the 1300s, a statue of Saint Alexander on top in the 1600s, and the installation of a lift in the 1960s. Every evening at 10 PM, the bell chimes 100 times, commemorating the historical closure of the city gates during Venetian rule. This tradition adds a unique cultural layer to the visitor experience.
