Spiaggia di Praia a Mare
2km Tyrrhenian beach with Dino Island caves
Spiaggia di Praia a Mare is the primary tourist attraction in Praia a Mare, a beach resort town in the province of Cosenza, Calabria, Italy, located on the Tyrrhenian Sea. The beach stretches for approximately 2 kilometers, with the northern end featuring sandy shores and the southern end becoming increasingly pebbly. During the summer season, the beach is divided into approximately 50 lidos (private beach clubs), but unprotected slivers of public beach remain accessible at no cost.
The area offers several natural and historical features. At the southern end, Dino Island is a rock outcrop located 100 meters from shore, featuring large sea caves accessible by small craft and paddle boats. A medieval tower, built by Byzantine forces to guard the coast, stands on volcanic rock at the southerly extremity of the beach. Additionally, the Madonna della Grotta, a church built inside a large cave complex carved by wave action, is located about 50 meters up the mountain slopes above the town.
As a public coastal area, the beach has no opening hours or admission fees. It is accessible at all times. Exploring Spiaggia di Praia a Mare offers a profound insight into the coastal lifestyle of Calabria. For travelers, it serves as an essential stop to appreciate the region’s natural beauty. The combination of sandy shores, historical ruins, and cave churches makes it a memorable destination. It complements visits to other landmarks in the area, such as the Grotte di Pertosa-Auletta and the historic center of Praia a Mare, providing a comprehensive view of the local identity. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking on pebbly terrain and to bring water, especially during the summer months.
