Sirmione Peninsula and Scaligero Castle

The Sirmione Peninsula, often called the "Pearl of Lake Garda," is a narrow strip of land extending into the lake, known for its thermal springs and Roman ruins. At the entrance to the historic center stands the Scaligero Castle, a well-preserved medieval fortification built by the Scaliger family in the 13th century. The castle features crenelated towers, thick stone walls, and a unique fortified dock that allows boats to enter directly into the fortress, a rare architectural feature for a lakeside castle.

The site is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM, with the last entry 30 minutes before closing. It is closed on Mondays. Admission requires a ticket, which can be purchased at the entrance office, though entry is free on the first Sunday of every month, attracting larger crowds. The castle is part of the Garda Museums complex, which also includes the nearby Grottoes of Catullus, a massive Roman villa complex dating back to the 1st century BC.
