Parco del Valentino

Italy’s first public garden with a medieval village

6.4/10
#1 of 10 in Turin

Parco del Valentino is Turin’s most beloved green space and Italy’s first public garden, officially opened in 1856. Spanning 500,000 square meters along the banks of the Po River, it serves as a major urban oasis for leisure, recreation, and culture. The park stretches for 2.5 kilometers, featuring centuries-old plane trees shading wide lawns where locals picnic.

A key attraction within the park is the Borgo Medievale, one of Turin’s most original sites. Built between 1882 and 1884 by architects Alfredo d'Andrade and Camillo Boito for the General Italian Exhibition of 1884, this structure is a faithful reconstruction of a 15th-century Piedmontese and Aosta Valley village. The park also houses the University’s Botanical Garden, which contains over 2,000 plant species.

Historically, the park has hosted significant events, including the Eurovision Village during the 2022 Eurovision Song Contest. It also holds motorsport history, having hosted the "Gran Premio del Valentino," including the first Formula One race after WWII in 1946, from 1935 to 1955.

As a public park, Parco del Valentino has no admission fees and is accessible to visitors at all times. Exploring the park offers a profound insight into Turin’s social and cultural history. For travelers, it serves as an essential stop to appreciate the city’s blend of nature and architecture. The combination of historical landmarks and recreational spaces makes it a memorable destination. It complements visits to other landmarks in Turin, such as the Mole Antonelliana and the Royal Palace, providing a comprehensive view of the region’s identity.
