Grotta dello Smeraldo (Emerald Grotto)
Karst cave with emerald light reflections
The Grotta dello Smeraldo, or Emerald Grotto, is a natural karst cave located in Conca dei Marini, just outside Amalfi and Positano on the Amalfi Coast. Formed over millennia and filled with seawater, the cave is famous for the magical emerald reflections created when sunlight filters through underwater openings. It was discovered in 1932 by fisherman Luigi Buonocore, ending centuries of local legend regarding its existence.
Inside, visitors can see stalactites and stalagmites from when the cave was above sea level, as well as an underwater nativity scene. The reflections of light on the water and the original sculptures create the illusion of being in an ancient temple. The experience offers a unique blend of natural beauty and geological history.
Practical details include opening hours from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily. The admission fee is EUR 6 per person. Access may be suspended without notice due to adverse weather or sea conditions, so it is advisable to check local conditions before visiting. The grotto is located a few kilometers from Amalfi and Positano, making it an easy excursion from either town.
For travelers, the Grotta dello Smeraldo provides a memorable stop that highlights the natural wonders of the Amalfi Coast. The combination of historical context, geological features, and visual spectacle makes it a significant attraction. Visitors should bring appropriate footwear and be prepared for potential delays if sea conditions are rough.
