Basilica of San Vigilio

The Early Christian Basilica of San Vigilio in Trento is an archaeological site located beneath the current Cathedral of Trento. Discovered during excavations in the 1970s, the basilica was originally built at the end of the 4th century AD as a cemetery basilica following the martyrdom of Saints Sisinnio, Martirio, and Alessandro. It later housed the remains of Bishop Vigilio, the patron saint of Trento, and served as the cathedral between the 9th and 10th centuries before being replaced by the current structure in the 13th century.

Today, the site is part of the Museo Diocesano Tridentino. Visitors can explore preserved mosaics, religious motifs painted on stones, and high-relief decorations that offer a glimpse into early Christian art and architecture.
