Levanto Beach (Spiaggia di Levanto)
Gateway to Cinque Terre with Blue Flag sandy beach
Levanto Beach (Spiaggia di Levanto) is a long sandy beach located in the Liguria region of Italy, serving as the northern gateway to the Cinque Terre. Situated on the Riviera di Levante in the province of La Spezia, the beach is set in a bay sheltered by the Mesco promontory to the north and the hinterland to the south. It has been awarded the Blue Flag for sea quality, indicating high standards of water quality and environmental management.
Unlike the more crowded Cinque Terre villages, Levanto offers a relaxed atmosphere with a well-developed tourist infrastructure, including car parks, services, and direct access to the beach. It is considered an ideal base for exploring the Riviera. The town is accessible via a regional train from Genova Piazza Principe, with the railway station being the last stop before entering the Cinque Terre.
Levanto features a well-preserved medieval village and a thirteenth-century communal Loggia, which was listed in 2007 in the UNESCO Register of Witness Monuments of Culture and Peace. While the town itself is not part of the Cinque Terre UNESCO World Heritage Site, its historical significance remains notable. As a public coastal area, the beach has no opening hours or admission fees. Exploring Levanto Beach offers a profound insight into the coastal lifestyle of Liguria. For travelers, it serves as an essential stop to appreciate the region’s natural beauty. The combination of sandy shores and medieval architecture makes it a memorable destination. It complements visits to other landmarks in the area, such as the Cinque Terre trails and the town’s historic center, providing a comprehensive view of the local identity.
